Importing a WordPress Export into a local Installation

I’ve (Sept 25) found a simpler ways to test with a WordPress clone, imprting not only my posts, but my whole WP installation, incl. themes, cutomizations and plugins:

  • I used the free plugin „WP Migrate“ for the backup and „LocalWP“ for the clone (Apache, WordPress, MySQL). The installation on my PC was incredibly slow. I tried it on my ARM desktop PC in a 16GB Windows Sandbox and on my Intel notebook in an 8GB sandbox. I used a sandbox because I don’t install things like this on my productive PCs. The slowness on the desktop could be due to the ARM emulation, while the issue on the notebook might be its age. Maybe it works better on your PCs.
  • Laragon was way faster on my ARM desktop, but is more tedious to configure.
  • XAMPP seemed outdated, so I did not try it.

As a precaution for crashes of my hosted, managed WordPress installation or me accidentally destroying my content, I frequently export all content to an XML file (5MB) via Tools > Export. I had doubts about being able to restore my content from such a small export file. To avoid risking destroying my life WordPress site, with a test restore, I successfully restored an export file into a local WordPress test installation.
